Master Class Salzburg 2013

“There are more surprises in life than in one’s dreams. It was by sheer chance that I met Prof. Janet Perry. I have had some sessions of singing lessons with her and already, I have learned so much. Prof. Perry has accomplished a golden career on the international stage. During her teaching, she can draw on her own experiences as a performer and she pinpoints each singer’s need and provides guidance and insight in such a gentle and precise manner. Ms. Perry’s techniques are immediately useful. I hope in the near future to have the opportunity to study with her again as I prepare for my upcoming recordings and Liederabends. I feel so blessed. Goethe is right, “Das Leben, es ist gut.”

To meet you, during this masterclass in Salzburg, was a deeply moving experience. In fact, it was the first time I took lesson with a soprano teacher… And it changes so much in my way of seeing things! All these resonances I didn’t know before, or singing with this focus which gives an another sound to my voice… You can’t imagine how my voice changed in one month thanks to your precise exercises I always do before singing…you’re one of rare persons I met who know perfectly what’s the right vocal technique.  Céline

Kann man vibrato erlernen?

Liebe Frau Perry

Continue reading

Concerning Singers

No one who doesn’t sing can imagine what this study entails. What normal mortal feels what shape his tongue feels like in his mouth, what a high harmonic feels like above the head, what a low diaphragm feels like and how that changes the sound?

The study of singing is to study internal aerodynamics, and feel a kind of geometry as sound is created, a geometry of vibration which is subjectively recognizable during the act of singing. Continue reading

Concerning Vowels

What is an ‘A’? I have struggled with this for the whole life of learning to sing, and I am still learning. I come from a Minnesota ‘A’, which is flat, nasal and friendly.

Why do Italians have such resonant ‘A’s? Continue reading
